With ongoing budget cuts, belt tightening is a constant reality for law enforcement everywhere. Unfortunately, these cuts impact the availability of crucial items like bullet proof vests.

These teams of dog and handler are often the point of the spear in many tactical operations. The lack of body armor leaves them vulnerable to serious injury or even death.

A vest might have saved this dog's life.

At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, deputies were responding to reports of a domestic dispute there when they heard a gunshot and evacuated residents from the area. After unsuccessful attempts to negotiate with the man inside, the sheriff's SWAT team threw chemical munitions into the home.

Negotiations continued to go nowhere, according to the written release, so the SWAT team later attempted to enter with a patrol dog.

According to the statement: "Upon entry into the residence, shots were fired by the suspect, fatally wounding the K9. A SWAT team member returned fire and the SWAT team tactically retreated from the residence."
